SHE THRIVESWomen’s Health and Wellbeing Programme in Nigeria

Her Health. Her Wellbeing. Her Future.

Empowering Women with Knowledge, Support and Opportunities to Live Healthier, More Resilient Lives.

Every woman deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, informed and fulfilling life. Yet for many women, access to reliable health information, preventive care and appropriate support remains shaped by where they live, what they earn and the resources available within their communities.

At ChangePoint Advancement Initiative for Development (C-PAID), we believe women’s health and wellbeing should never be an afterthought in development.

SHE THRIVES is C-PAID’s flagship women’s health and wellbeing initiative, created to strengthen health literacy, encourage preventive healthcare, promote emotional wellbeing and help women connect with appropriate health and community support services.

Through accessible education, community engagement, health partnerships and locally relevant interventions, SHE THRIVES seeks to help women understand their health needs, make informed decisions and navigate barriers to care.

Our approach recognises that women’s wellbeing encompasses physical, emotional and social dimensions. It also recognises that sustainable improvements require more than occasional awareness campaigns. They require trusted information, supportive environments, functioning referral pathways and meaningful collaboration with qualified service providers.

Because when women are healthy, informed and supported, they are better positioned to pursue opportunities, care for themselves and participate fully in their communities.

Why SHE THRIVES Matters

Good Health Should Not Depend on Circumstance.

We believe that empowering women with health knowledge is important. Helping them access the support they need is equally essential.

A woman’s health can influence almost every aspect of her life, from education and employment to family responsibilities, financial security and community participation.

Across Nigeria, women continue to experience challenges in accessing timely, affordable and appropriate healthcare. These challenges may include geographic distance from services, financial constraints, limited awareness of health risks, social stigma, inadequate support networks and difficulties navigating available health systems.

For women living in rural and underserved communities, these barriers can be especially pronounced.

Preventable health challenges may remain unidentified until they become serious. Important health decisions may be made without access to accurate information. Emotional distress may go unrecognised, while women experiencing domestic or social pressures may lack safe and reliable pathways to support.

Health awareness alone cannot eliminate these challenges. Women also need the confidence, information and practical connections required to seek appropriate assistance when needed.

SHE THRIVES responds by placing women, their experiences and their circumstances at the centre of programme design.

Our intention is to strengthen the connection between health knowledge, preventive action, appropriate support and sustained wellbeing.

Pregnancy, childbirth and the period following delivery are important stages in women’s lives, requiring reliable information, appropriate care and supportive environments.

SHE THRIVES MOTHERHOOD seeks to strengthen awareness of maternal health needs and support women in accessing qualified healthcare services throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period.

The pathway will prioritise education and referral partnerships rather than substitute for professional antenatal, delivery or postnatal care.

Areas of intervention

The programme seeks to reduce stigma and encourage early help-seeking while recognising that mental health assessment, counselling and treatment require suitably qualified professionals.

Areas of intervention

  • Healthy coping practices and self-care education
  • Community support and peer connection
  • Maternal and postpartum mental wellbeing awareness

Priority 04

SHE THRIVES DIGNITY

Information. Confidence. Dignity.

Menstrual Health, Hygiene and Personal Wellbeing

Menstrual health is an important aspect of health, dignity, education and participation in everyday life. Yet misinformation, stigma, limited access to appropriate products and inadequate sanitation can create avoidable challenges.

SHE THRIVES DIGNITY focuses on improving menstrual health knowledge, encouraging informed hygiene practices and promoting respectful discussions about menstrual wellbeing.

Activities involving adolescents will be age-appropriate and delivered with appropriate safeguarding and institutional consent arrangements.

Areas of intervention

  • Menstrual health and hygiene education
  • Awareness of menstrual cycle variations and symptoms that warrant medical attention

Priority 05

SHE THRIVES CONNECT

Bringing Health Information and Support Closer to Communities.

Community Health Outreach and Referral Access

Health services are most useful when people know about them, can navigate them and are able to access them safely.

SHE THRIVES CONNECT is the programme’s community outreach and service-navigation pathway, designed to strengthen links between women and qualified healthcare or social support providers.

Particular attention will be given to rural and underserved communities, where awareness and access barriers may affect timely use of services.

Any clinical screening or health services organised in collaboration with SHE THRIVES will be performed by appropriately licensed professionals and authorised facilities, in accordance with applicable requirements.

Areas of intervention

  • Community health literacy sessions
  • Health awareness campaigns and information events
  • Service navigation and healthcare referral information
  • Partnerships with primary healthcare facilities and qualified providers
  • Community engagement around preventive healthcare

Priority 06

SHE THRIVES STRONG

Strengthening Resilience. Supporting Women’s Choices.

Personal Wellbeing, Safety and Support Networks

Women’s health and wellbeing are shaped by the environments in which they live, work and participate.

Supportive relationships, personal safety, reliable information and opportunities to make informed decisions can contribute to greater wellbeing and resilience.

SHE THRIVES STRONG addresses selected social and personal wellbeing factors through education, supportive community engagement and appropriate specialist partnerships.

Areas of intervention

  • Personal wellbeing and self-advocacy education
  • Awareness of healthy relationships and personal boundaries

  • Community peer-support and wellbeing networks
Intended outcome

Women with stronger awareness of personal wellbeing, available protection resources and supportive community networks.

How SHE THRIVES Works

From Awareness to Action. From Isolation to Support.

Our approach seeks to make health information understandable, trusted and relevant while strengthening connections to appropriate services.

  1. 01

    Listen to Communities

We aim to engage women, community representatives, healthcare stakeholders and local organisations to understand priority needs, misconceptions, access barriers and available services.

  2. 02

    Deliver Relevant Health Education

We will develop accessible, evidence-informed learning activities using appropriate languages, formats and community platforms.

  3. 03

    Build Trusted Partnerships

We seek to collaborate with qualified healthcare professionals, primary healthcare facilities, public health institutions and community organisations to strengthen programme quality and referral arrangements.

  4. 04

    Support Appropriate Action

Where participants require professional care or specialist support, the programme will provide information and referrals within an agreed, safe and clearly defined service-navigation framework.

  5. 05

    Measure Progress and Learn

We aim to assess changes in health knowledge, programme accessibility, appropriate referral uptake where verifiable and participant experiences, while protecting personal information and confidentiality.

Who SHE THRIVES Serves

Inclusive Care. Responsive Community Support.

SHE THRIVES is designed for women and, through appropriate age-specific activities, adolescent girls who would benefit from improved health knowledge, preventive awareness and wellbeing support.

Individual programme activities will specify eligibility, geographic scope, age considerations and available services.

Participation in SHE THRIVES will not replace medical consultation, diagnosis or treatment by licensed healthcare professionals.

Depending on the intervention, priority beneficiaries may include:

  • Women in rural and underserved communities
  • Women with limited access to reliable health information
  • Pregnant and postpartum women seeking health education and service-navigation support
  • Women experiencing barriers to preventive healthcare
  • Women facing social or economic circumstances affecting their wellbeing
  • Women with disabilities requiring accessible health information
  • Adolescent girls participating in suitable menstrual health and personal wellbeing education
  • Women who would benefit from awareness of mental health and community support services
Reaching Rural and Underserved Communities

Health Knowledge Should Reach Beyond Major Cities.

Women in rural communities may experience unique barriers arising from distance, transport costs, limited healthcare infrastructure, information gaps and other local circumstances.

SHE THRIVES seeks to respond through locally relevant community outreach rather than relying exclusively on conventional urban training venues or digital communication.

Subject to funding and implementation partnerships, our approach may include community health education sessions, collaboration with primary healthcare facilities, locally appropriate information materials, trained community facilitators and mobile outreach activities delivered with qualified providers.

We intend to work with local stakeholders to ensure that programme delivery is culturally sensitive, accessible and responsive to community priorities without compromising medical accuracy, dignity or individual choice.

For women who require professional healthcare or social support, effective referral arrangements will be essential. Outreach activities should strengthen connections to existing services rather than create parallel systems that cannot be sustained.

The Change We Seek

Better Information. Stronger Connections. Healthier Choices.

SHE THRIVES aims to contribute to improvements in women’s health literacy, wellbeing awareness, appropriate care-seeking and access to support systems.

Improved Health Literacy

Women gain greater understanding of relevant health topics, preventive practices and circumstances that require professional assessment.

Increased Preventive Health Awareness

Participants become more familiar with available preventive services, routine health guidance and appropriate care-seeking practices.

Better Maternal Health Knowledge

Women receive evidence-informed information about pregnancy, postpartum wellbeing and the importance of appropriate maternal healthcare.

Stronger Mental Wellbeing Awareness

Participants improve their understanding of emotional wellbeing, stigma, support networks and professional care pathways.

Improved Menstrual Health Knowledge

Women and girls gain clearer, age-appropriate information about menstrual health, hygiene and appropriate support.

Strengthened Referral Connections

Community participants can more readily identify suitable healthcare or specialist support services and understand how to access them.

Greater Community Support

Local partners and participants strengthen relationships that promote informed health decisions, respectful engagement and appropriate support.

Our programme evaluation will focus on verifiable changes, including health knowledge, participation, informed care-seeking and referral outcomes where ethically and practically measurable.

We will not claim reductions in disease prevalence, maternal mortality or other clinical outcomes without an evaluation design capable of substantiating such changes.

Our Commitment to Responsible Health Programming

Health Information Must Be Accurate. Support Must Be Safe.

SHE THRIVES recognises that health-related programmes carry significant responsibilities.

We are committed to developing activities that respect women’s dignity, autonomy, confidentiality and right to make informed choices.

Health education content will be developed or reviewed with appropriately qualified professionals. Clinical services, if incorporated into funded activities, will be delivered by licensed providers within their professional scope and under applicable authorisations.

We aim to establish suitable arrangements for informed consent, confidential referrals, responsible data handling, safeguarding, complaints and incident reporting.

Activities involving children and adolescents will require additional child protection measures, age-appropriate information and applicable parental or guardian consent arrangements.

Our approach to women’s health is non-judgemental, respectful and grounded in the importance of reliable information, voluntary participation and appropriate professional care.

Sustainability and Community Ownership

Creating Knowledge and Connections That Endure.

Sustainable improvements in women’s wellbeing require more than short-term awareness events.

SHE THRIVES will seek to strengthen the local knowledge, institutional relationships and community networks that support women in making informed health decisions.

Our sustainability approach will prioritise:

Partnerships with Existing Health Systems

Strengthening relationships with primary healthcare facilities and other appropriate providers rather than duplicating services.

Community-Based Learning

Developing accessible educational approaches that can be adapted and repeated within communities.

Locally Relevant Information

Using practical content that women can understand, retain and apply.

Referral Continuity

Encouraging clear, reliable pathways to appropriate services, supported by partner agreements and defined responsibilities.

Institutional Capacity Development

Building the capabilities of programme facilitators and community partners within appropriate non-clinical roles.

Evidence and Continuous Improvement

Learning from programme feedback and measurable results to improve quality, relevance and sustainability.
